Gravity

I'll fly so high, no ceiling when I'm in my zone!

Gravity's a fun magic for sure, also one that many types of career wouldn't mind an applicant having due to how versatile it's uses can be. One could use it in a horror film set to make things seemed possessed while another could use it in an officer's job to apprehend a suspect.

Now as the name states, this Scientific Magic circles around the ability to alter the gravitational pull of the world on objects, other dops and themselves, so yes you could make your Aunt Petunia who you hate so much float away just like that if you really were that malicious.

BASIC SKILLS

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Increase Gravity

Desc: The first thing one may think of when thinking of Gravity magic is the ability to increase and decrease how gravity affects oneself. They’d be correct to think that, as those two abilities are some of the first you’ll learn! Increase Gravity is typically used by inventors who want to keep an object in place while working on it, though it may also just be used by dopals who don’t want to be pushed around.

Learning: There are many ways to learn Increase Gravity, though one tried and true method involves researching gravity itself, then focusing on the feeling one’s centre of gravity has. The feeling of their feet on the floor, and the pull towards the ground they feel when they lift them. This skill simply involves increasing that pull, which is easy enough to do once you’re familiar with the feeling and can thus focus on it.

Limits/Risks: Using this ability too much can result in a dop feeling rather heavy and lethargic, and a dopaline may need to rest after using it as their body needs time to re-regulate its gravitational pull.

Decrease Gravity

Desc: The opposite of increasing gravity is decreasing it of course, and this skill tends to be most dops’ preference just from the fun it provides! Some dopalines may dip into Gravity magic just to learn this skill, and aspiring astronauts may also learn it as it gives a good insight into how walking on the moon may feel.

Learning: The tip to learning this skill is to understand the feeling of weightlessness. Some just research through books, while others take a more practical approach and may take a trip all the way to a theme park! However you learn about it, once you understand weightlessness, this skill should be a walk in the park. Or a slightly floaty bounce in the park!

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: The effects of this skill are less floating entirely, and more feeling as though a weight has been lifted from you. That floaty feeling you get when you finally stop giving someone a piggyback! Be warned though, as fun as this ability is, using it too much may leave you lightheaded and generally woozy feeling.

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: This ability isn’t strong enough to affect other dopalines, luckily, but it’s still heavily recommended you don’t use it on smaller creatures. It’s also difficult to revert an object back to its original shape after using this ability.

Compress Object

Desc: Manipulating gravity can actually be rather scary when you think about it. Gravity pulls people to the ground, but it could theoretically push things as well. A bored dopaline discovered this skill through those thoughts once, as they managed to make a rubix cube’s gravitational pull push it inwards until it was more of a rubix crumpled sphere.

Learning:

To learn this skill, it’s recommended you get a small, 3D object, or a piece of paper. Examine how gravity pulls it towards whatever surface you’re walking with(the floor, a table, do what you like). Then, once you understand how gravity affects the object, push it, but specifically focusing on its gravity - try to push its gravity in on it, if that makes sense.

Wall Walker

Desc: Another simple mobility skill, because who doesn’t want to just walk on a wall every so often? Once again, dopalines in the law enforcement field tend to take some time to learn this skill as it makes chasing down criminals a lot easier, though a spy or criminal may also take it for the extra help it provides their jobs without need for extra equipment.

Learning: A fun activity some dopals learning this skill like to do is simply running at a wall. Some study is probably required beforehand, but others have said that just running at a wall and focusing on changing how your gravity is centred works too!

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: Using this skill, especially on a ceiling, for too long can lead to a dop feeling rather lightheaded, as though the blood has rushed to their head from being upside down for an extended period of time. Overuse of this skill can also generally be tiring, and if a dopaline isn’t focused on keeping it active, they could end up falling off of the wall they were running up just a second ago.

ADVANCED SKILLS

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Walk on Air

PREREQUISITE: Wall Walker

Desc: Some dopalines like to take this skill for even more mobile convenience, law enforcement and crime aligned dops especially. Others take it as a stepping stone to true levitation, though being able to walk on air and freak out your friends is a good bonus.

Learning: Many practising this skill like to climb a wall and jump off of it, while others may choose the ceiling for the same method. Others just decrease their gravity as far as they can and jump until they stay floating. The former method tends to be more effective, as this skill directly leads off of Wall Walker!

Limits/Risks: This skill doesn’t allow for complete levitation just yet, as a dopaline still needs to make a walking motion with their feet to continue moving. It’s as though the air beneath them is the floor. This skill is also much more taxing on a dopaline than simple wall walking.

Shape Object

PREREQUISITE: Compress Object

Desc: A handy skill used often by architects, artists and inventors alike. The ability to change an object’s shape with nothing but your gear and your mind is one desired by many, and one easily obtainable with some time and patience! If you’re the mischievous type, you could probably also find some less than legal uses for it.

Learning: Dopalines learning this skill will often use the same method they did for Compress Object, as this is pretty much the same skill but with more complexity added, as rather than simply pushing the gravity in on it, you’re manipulating the gravity in different directions to reshape it to your preferences. Simply take a piece of paper, or a cube, anything you can get your paws on really, and try to sculpt it into something you like! Do you make a paper swan? How about a colourful riggeling model that used to be a rubix cube?

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: Once again, this skill is ineffective on other dopalines. This being said, you could probably try to reshape or compress part of one by now! This isn’t recommended though. In fact, using this skill on part of another dopaline is assault. Also, much like with Compress Object, it’d be rather time and energy consuming to revert the object back to its original form, though by now it’s doable for both

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: Overuse of this skill is tiring once again, though if you’re only lifting one object it takes much less energy than lifting several. This ability in particular also seems to be reactive with emotion, as more frantic dopals may end up with objects flying all over the place!

Lift Object

PREREQUISITE: Decrease Gravity

Desc: Once you know how to decrease your own and others’ gravity, decreasing the gravity of inanimate objects should be child’s play! This skill is a must have for any busy dopaline without enough hands to carry everything they need on their person, as it’s effectively several extra hands! Unlimited hands!

Learning: Learning this skill can either be easy as pie or a frustrating struggle. A calm mindset is recommended, as if you’re not careful, you may end up with whatever object you’re trying to lift stuck to the ceiling! The tried and true method involves taking an object and focusing on how you decreased your own gravity, then charging that into the object in front of you.

Floor Slam

PREREQUISITE: Increase Gravity

Desc: Considered to be one of the less interesting abilities, this one still packs quite the punch! It’s often used in wrestling and other fight related sports, though dopals can also use it to show off their magical prowess on a trampoline in front of their friends!

Learning: This skill, once again, has many ways you can learn it - either you can jump up and down, increasing your gravity until you land with a loud thud, or you can simply read some books and try it on another dopaline if that works better for ya!

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: While the resulting slam of this skill may wind or slightly stagger dopalines around, it’s much more impressive when leaping from higher heights, however the risk of that comes in when dopalines get a bit too daring with their demonstrations, as this skill doesn’t negate as much damage as a skill like Air Cushion might. This skill can also only affect the dopaline using it.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Levitate

PREREQUISITES: Walk on Air & Decrease Gravity

Desc: The skill everyone’s been waiting for, complete and utter levitation! A dopaline without wings’ dream! A dopaline with broken and torn wings’ dream! Really anyone’s dream, levitation is just a cool skill.

Learning: To learn this skill, a dopaline simply needs to close their eyes and combine the sensations of Decrease Gravity and Walk on Air. That weightlessness, and the air being just a solid surface beneath them, except this time they should imagine the air as more akin to a body of water you can swim through. A successful attempt should result in the user floating not too far from the ground.

Limits/Risks: This ability is extremely tiring if used over long distances, or if the dopaline using it makes multiple small movements in quick succession. Generally, as long as a dopal is levitating, they’re losing energy slowly, so it’s not exactly recommended for long fights or journeys. Falling from a large height is a real danger of this skill.

Super Slam

PREREQUISITES: Lift Object & Increase Gravity

Desc: Yet another skill for law enforcement or criminals, this ability is bound to subdue any dop in seconds if you’re violent enough with it. For this reason though, it’s fairly frowned upon to use it for anything other than getting an object across a room quickly, and most only learn it so if their friend needs something they can throw it over to them.

Learning: It’s most advised you get an object rather than a willing participant for this ability, as it can get quite violent quite quickly. First, you should lift the object, then direct it with your hand and increase its gravity in that direction. The result should be the object slamming into wherever you directed it!

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: Usage of this ability on another dopaline can easily result in severe injuries, the most common being concussions and broken bones. Overuse can also have an effect on the user, resulting in quick exhaustion and a possible arm ache from waving it around so much. It’s possible to just turn your head or think about where you want your target to go for it, but these methods are still tiring, possibly even more than just using your arm.

Gravity Magic 1 Art.png

Limits/Risks: Dopalines caught in the shockwave of this ability often find themselves knocked down and winded, and there’s also the possibility of them hitting an obstacle on their way down. Using this ability is ill advised in a regular fight, as uninvolved passerbys can easily be caught in the crossfire with it. And while using this ability does negate some of the damage such a large fall may inflict, it doesn’t remove it completely, so a dopal shouldn’t try to be too daring with the height they leap from.

Ground Pound

PREREQUISITES: Floor Slam & Wall Walker

Desc: If you thought the Floor Slam was pathetic, just wait for its older sibling, the Ground Pound! Combining a Floor Slam with the ability to walk on walls and thus reach higher heights somehow results in a larger slam, as you’re given more time to truly increase your gravity and make an impact. Used in ‘Extreme Wrestling’, a sport where a lot of potentially damaging and thus banned manoeuvres are allowed, this ability can also pack quite the punch in a regular fight and quickly gain you the upper hand.

Learning: Climbing a wall is of course heavily advised for this skill, though some dopals like to take it further and leap from buildings. As you’re falling, you should focus on the gravity pulling you towards the ground, and increase that pull as much as your body will possibly allow you to. The result should be an immense shockwave when you hit the ground that can knock over most things in its path!
