Night Variants

Normal dopalines by day, horrifying beasts by night...or so the stories say.

MYO Colouring

Boundless Logo.png

Much like subspecies, Night Variant MYOs have their own set of palettes. However, due to these dopalines not being a subspecies of their own, you may EITHER use a night variant palette OR the standard/subspecies palettes.

(All Cursed Annual Pass MYOs are standard by default - you must use a Dream Fang to make them a subspecies.)

However this is overruled when it comes to using special palettes such as the Hallowrise Palettes or the Early Bird Palettes. Those are usable with any MYO no matter what species.

Legends reborn...

It’s said in the ancient times of the Boundless, when civilisation was just starting out, the night time was one of fear and strife. Horrifying beasts that vaguely resembled dopalines would ravage any town in their path, and few lived to tell the tale.

Until, of course, every last beast was slain.

Right?

Well, recently there’s been reports of these ‘night beasts’ making a return…and they've now been dubbed ‘Night Variants’, as Lycanthropy and Vampirism can affect all dopaline species, but aren’t entirely considered a mutation.

Lypalines
Abilities & Lore

Lypalines, to put it simply, are dopalines afflicted with lycanthropy. By day, they’re just your average Joe - one could even be your neighbour!

But once the sun sets, they take on a more monstrous form, and prowl the lands in search of fresh meat to satiate their hunger. It’s also said that lypalines draw power from the moon, and feast on moonlight when they cannot find food.

Over time, a lypaline may gain more control over when they transform, and some can even achieve this by day, though without the moon’s energy it’s difficult to maintain. This often helps dopalines who may want an advantage in combat, as lypalines are much more imposing than your average dop.

Unfortunately, even the most seasoned of lypalines cannot resist a full moon’s call for transformation.

Lypalines are not all dangerous and violent - a lot of the time, they’re actually just terrified, as little information is provided to prepare them for what’s to come. It makes sense - until now, they were thought to be extinct!

A smaller ability lypalines can have is generally heightened senses - better eyesight, hearing, smell…having a lypaline around is generally considered a good idea if you plan to go on an adventure. It’s also said they can sense when there’s silver around(it makes a low ringing sound, and they instinctively try to avoid it), and find that touching it burns their skin.

Vampilines
Abilities & Lore

The more regal of the Night Variants, vampiric dopalines are said to blend into the shadows, only striking lone targets to feast on their blood.

This isn’t entirely true - chances are, you won’t even know someone’s a vampire unless you know them personally or look them in the eyes. They don’t stalk at night for victims unless it was already in their nature - most instead turn to livestock for sustenance, and some farmers may even be willing to spare some blood if asked nicely.

Vampiric dopalines have the uncanny ability to extract only blood from another animal by biting into them with their fangs, leaving behind a clean wound that doesn’t bleed. A vampiric dop can also identify various details about the blood they drink or are in the vicinity of, such as which animal it belongs to and if any illness is present. Vampilines who’ve honed the latter ability may also be able to identify specific diseases present within an animal or dopaline.

Another, lesser known ability of vampilines is to transform. Vampilines can take on two forms, most useful for stealth and mobility;

  • Their own shadow - they can choose whether or not their eyes are visible, but otherwise they are simply a silhouette of themselves.
    And

  • A bat or flusterbug form.

Lypalines
Visual Guide

The most important mandatory part of your lypaline’s design is a vibrant yellow ring around their pupil, as pictured. Another, optional detail is a second set of lower snaggleteeth - these should be distinctly larger than their first set.

Transformed Form

Lypalines, contrary to popular belief, are not restricted to a canine appearance. Their night form will simply match whatever they look like by day, but with longer claws, teeth, and generally sharper features.

Vampilines
Visual Guide

Your vampiline, much like a lypaline, must have a ring around their pupil - except theirs should be red. An optional detail for them is also a second set of snaggleteeth, except these ones should take on a more fanglike appearance.

Transformed Form(s)

Their shadow form is a simple silhouette of themselves, but their bat/flusterbug form is where it gets more interesting. You may loosely follow the flusterbug MYO rules for this, as long as the finalised design looks as close to your dopaline as possible.

Hybrids

There are two ways a hybrid of the two variants can show up. Either through a vampiline and a lypaline(or, rarely, a two hybrids) breeding, OR through a dopaline being bitten by both a vampiline and a lypaline in quick succession.

Through both methods, one variant will be more dominant in the hybrid than the other. For example, if a dopaline was bitten by a vampire then a lycanthrope, they’d only take on a couple lypaline traits in favour of more vampiline traits, and if a vampiline and lypaline breed, it’ll likely be randomised which variant is more dominant in the offspring.

The main tell that a dopaline is a hybrid is their eye ring - rather than red or yellow, it’ll be purple.

Obtainment Methods

There are very few ways to obtain a night variant dopaline;

A Cursed Annual Pass
This allows you to make a brand new dopaline that is either vampiric or lycanthropic.

Unfortunately, hybrids are not available through this method.

Having your dopaline get bitten by a lycanthrope or vampire:
Vampirism and lycanthropy is most often transmitted via bite. Note that a dopaline being afflicted with these does NOT mean they’ll inherently be violent towards others, but if it is in character for a dopaline to bite another, then that can make for some cool plot opportunity amongst yourselves!

Breeding
Lycanthropy and Vampirism can be passed down via breeding, though at least one parent must be a night variant for it to be possible.

How to Submit

For existing dopalines:

  • You must draw how they obtained lycanthropy/vampirism.

  • You must then draw a new reference of the dopaline, with their new scar(s), eye rings clearly visible, and any forms they receive. This must be submitted to one of the art-gallery channels(or #events-gallery if this happens as part of an event).

For Cursed MYOs:

  • Draw your new dopaline & their transformed forms onto the apps below

  • Submit them to the #baby-and-grow-up-approvals channel as usual!
